Goal
The major goal of Economics Graduate Program is to train graduate candidates for professional economists in academia, research organizations, financial institutes, and other businesses. The program provides formal courses, seminars and workshops with emphasis on a thorough understanding of the principles of economic theory and its applications in various fields, along with creative thinking and analyzing skills.
Master's Degree Program
1. Students must earn 27 or more credits from the courses offered by the department.
2. After admission, students must complete the required coursework.
ECO5011 (Advanced Microeconomic Theory I) ECO5021 (Advanced Macroeconomics Theory I) ECO5030 (Advanced Econometrics I) ECO6201 (Research Paper and Presentation)
3. ECO6201 (Research Paper and Presentation) is compulsory only for those who enter the program after 2012.
4. ECO6000 (Mathematics for Economists) will not be counted in the GPA and for degree credit.
5. Students must take at least two courses offered in English, and one must be an elective course.
6. Students must pass the qualifying examinations of microeconomics and macroeconomics.
7. The thesis must be approved by the thesis committee.
Doctoral Degree Program
1. Students must earn 60 or more credits offered by the Department. The credits earned in the Master’s degree program can be counted as the credit requirement up to 30 credits with the prior approval of Graduate Committee.
2. The following major fields are offered:
1) Mathematical Economics 2) Econometrics 3) Monetary Economics 4) Public Economics 5) Urban Economics 6) Development Economics 7) Labor Economics 8) Resource and Environmental Economics 9) Industrial Organization 10) International Economics 11) Economic History 12) Economic Growth and Business Cycles 13) Other fields approved by the committee
3. The followings are required courses:
ECO5010 (Microeconomics) ECO5020 (Macroeconomics) ECO5030 (Econometrics) ECO6001 (Advanced Topics in Microeconomic) ECO6002 (Advanced Topics in Macroeconomics)Mathematical Economics
4. Students must pass the qualifying examinations of microeconomics and macroeconomics, and two of major fields stated in 2.
5. The thesis must be approved by the thesis committee.
Combined Master/Ph.D. Program
The requirements are essentially the same as in Doctoral program. Students can be granted with Master’s degree provided that the conditions required to obtain Master’s degree are fulfilled.
